Editing Surfaces

By using various textures provided by SoftPlan Studio, you can create a more realistic 3-D image. To do this:

1.   Select Modify Edit Surface. Left click the surface you want to change. The Texture menu opens:

2.   Use the following items from the Texture menu to select and edit the texture you want to apply to the component.

      Available Textures

The Available Textures section of the menu contains all the textures that are available. These textures are grouped by folder type in order to help you locate the texture you need. Any texture can be applied to any component, but by selecting the appropriate folder type, a list of the textures suitable for that item can be easily found.

When you click on a texture, the Current Selection section (located on the right side of the menu) is updated to give you a preview of the texture.

    Note:

      ·    If you select the first entry None from the Available Textures section (see Figure 31), no texture will be applied to the component, and the color assigned to the item is used when generating the image.

      ·    The second entry in the Available Textures section is On Model. See Figure 31. It contains a list of the textures that are currently being used on the model. Use this list when you want to match the texture of a component to a texture already being used.

      ·    To help you choose a texture, click the Pick button from the bottom right of the Texture menu or click on the current texture displayed. The menu will expand to show a preview of the textures available for the item type highlighted in the Available Textures section. Select the texture you want to use from the preview of textures. See figure 32.

      Opacity

Use this item to increase or decrease the transparency of a texture.

      Options

Auto Orient When checked, the texture is automatically rotated to suit the orientation of the surface. Surfaces that are short and wide will apply the texture with no rotation. Surfaces that are long and narrow will rotate the texture 90 degrees.

                            · Use Auto Orient when adding wood textures in order that the grain of the wood will always follow the longest length of the surface.

Invert          - When checked, this item reverses the selected texture.

Rotate         - When checked, this item rotates the selected texture 90 degrees clockwise.

Scale           - A texture is made up of multiple images tiled in order to cover an item’s entire surface. If you check Scale, the single image appears once and is stretched to cover the item’s surface.

Smoothing - This feature is useful for applying to rounded objects to create a more rounded surface appearance.

Transparent - Use this item to make the background of a texture transparent.

When Transparent is checked for a texture, the color of the top left pixel and any other pixels of that same color are treated as transparent allowing you to see through the background. Only the remaining colors in the texture are displayed. For example, in the Fireplace folder, you’ll see a texture called fireplace fire. If you check Transparent for this texture, the black background of the texture will be invisible and only the logs and fire will show.

      Use Color

If you would like to use a color instead of a texture on a surface, select this option, and then click on the Color box. A Color selection menu opens allowing you to select or create any color you want to use.

      Auto Match Color to Texture

By default this option is selected. SoftPlan Studio automatically selects the color to use that is the most predominant in the texture displayed in the Use Texture section.

      Color Selection Tool

Using this feature, you can match any color currently displayed on the screen. To do this:

      i.    Left click on the Color Selection Tool button.

ii.   Left click on the surface of an object of which you would like to repeat the color.

iii. Make sure the radio button for Use Color is selected and select ok on the edit texture menu. The color is then applied to the selected object.

      Color Swatches

When you select the Color Swatches button, the Choose Color Swatch menu opens:

In the color swatch field you can select paint color collections from paint producers. Once you have chosen the collection you can search for the particular color you want from the color field. Use the scroll bar to scroll through the paint color collection.

      Use Texture

To use a texture for a surface instead of a color, select the radio button for this field.

      ·    To help you choose a texture, click the Pick button from the bottom right of the Texture menu or click on the current texture displayed. The menu will expand to show a preview of the textures available for the item type highlighted in the Available Textures section. Select the texture you want to use from the preview of textures. See figure 32.

      Create Colored Texture

You can create your own custom colored textures for use on your project. To do this:

      i.    Click on the Create Colored Texture button.

ii.   A Color selection menu opens allowing you to create any color you want.

iii. After creating the color, click ok. The Enter Texture Name menu opens.

iv. Enter the new color name, and then press ok. The new colored texture is then added to the selected folder.

      Note:

Changes made to a texture appear once the image is regenerated. Adjustments do not appear in the Current Selection section of the Texture menu.

3.   Select ok from the Texture menu.
